My Friends — My Greatest Treasure

In distant childhood, through the hardest years,
I taught myself to hide my pain and fears.
And even then, I came to see with care —
My friends were all the wealth I’d ever bear.

Misfortune trailed me, always close behind,
At times, no path or shelter could I find.
But what kept me alive through every test —
My friends, the ones who truly knew me best.

At times, I loved them more than loved myself
Perhaps that borders on a blasphemy.
But I would give my all without regret —
My friends — my love, my soul, my alchemy

Now friends are leaving, fading out of view,
And parting is a grief I can’t undo.
Yet while I live, they live by any measure
Inside my heart – my friends, my greatest treasure
