China may be known for its Peking Opera, but it has also developed many other types of opera across the country over a thousand-year period. We explore five iconic genres: the ink-wash elegance of Kunqu, the golden-age grandeur of Peking Opera, the pastoral ballads of Huangmei opera, the lyrical Jiangnan melodies of Yue Opera, and the vibrant folk storytelling of Ping Opera.

Ph.D. Shaohua Zheng, Deputy Editor of Chinese Drama Magazine at the Drama Art Center of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, takes you on a journey of the most enjoyable moments that entertained the Chinese people for the past millennium.
