We stumbled across Lake Superior's ancient volcanic rock formations while doing a walk through tour of Brunette Park in Keweenaw County, Michigan. The Keweenaw Peninsula is known for its ancient basalt lava flows formed during the Midcontinent Rift event about 1.1 billion years ago.
