Description
It Had To Be You (Jones-Kahn) by Artie Shaw & his Orchestra
The Isham Jones-Gus Kahn hit of 1924 made a strong comeback in ’44 with three different recorded versions reaching the national best-sellers top-10 (see also Betty Hutton and Dick Haymes-Helen Forrest). This track had been recorded in December 1938 and originally issued on Bluebird B-10091, then reissued in 1944 on Victor 20-1593 while the musicians union remained on strike against Victor (aka the “Recording Ban”). Shaw had already recorded an updated arrangement of the song in 1941 (Victor 27536), but it was this re-release of the earlier version that caught on.
THE 1944 HITS ARCHIVE - a collection of commercial recordings and songs that proved popular during the calendar year 1944 via sales, sheet music, juke box play, and radio exposure.…plus some others that have gained increased recognition or have been shown to have had an impact during the decades that followed. You’ll note that due to the long-running ‘recording ban’ (musician’s union strike against the record companies), quite a number of this year’s best-sellers were recordings made back in 1942 or earlier. .
