The addition of instruments (organ, piano, guitar, and etc.) to the traditionally unaccompanied African-American Spiritual led to the development of Gospel music and its secular cousin Rhythm and Blues. This song, City Called Heaven, is a ‘sorrow song’ and the listener will notice the gaps between words representative of the style called ‘surge singing.’
