A SATURNALIA SONG | Nova Romans greeting the Saturnalia season with a Latin song

This video shows the start of the main ceremony of the Saturnalia, which was introduced by singing. It's fun, lighthearted and nothing is to be taken too seriously!

The Saturnalia have started, so let us all rejoice and put no limit to our fun! After the opening of our Saturnalia season in Britannia (UK) by consul C. Petronius, and other Nova Roman Saturnalia events in Thracia (Bulgaria) and Nova Britannia (New England region, USA), the central international celebration of the Saturnalia by Nova Roma jointly with Provincia Pannonia and Colonia Aquincum was held in ancient Aquincum (Budapest, Hungary) in the Aquincum Museum. The event was held on 15 October.

In place of the ailing consul M. Aurelius Cotta Iovius, the praefectus rei publicae et praetorio, Cn. Cornelius Lentulus, pontifex, the legatus pro praetore of the province chaired the event. Present were tribuna plebis Pompeia Messalina, quaestors Popillia Laenas and A. Scaevius, and several vigintivirs: Caecilia Sabina, Hortensia Theodora and C. Octavius. The province was, besides the governor, represented by the vice-governor T. Barbatius Naso, and legatus Sp. Porcius Gemma. The duumvirs of Nova Roman Colonia Aquincum, D. Septimius and Popillia Laenas, the colonial aediles Caecilia Sabina and Hortensia Theodora, the colonial quaestors Cn. Lentulus and M. Savariensis.

The approximately 30-40 guests at our Saturnalia came from many local communities of Nova Roma and some came even from other provinces. Participants came from the Legio XXI Rapax Pannonica (Rapax Pannonica), Cohors I Ulpia Pannoniorum, Cohors VI Carpathica (Colonia Rostallo), Lumen Mundi, Ludus Gladiatorum Aquincum, Familia Gladiatoria, Legio Leonum Valentiniani, and two guests from Hispania and Germania.
At the Saturnalia event, after the sacrifice to Saturn, the assembled Nova Roman citizens engaged in various fun Saturnalia games and contests, based on ancient Roman games, and in a simple banquette, with lots of wine, though! The contests were conducted by M. Flavius Memnon, lanista of the Ludus Gladiatorum Aquincum. The celebrants were divided into four teams, and competed against each other, which was all lighthearted and funny. The winner was the Naso Team, led by proquaestor T. Barbatius Naso, praefectus and optio of the Cohors I Ulpia Pannoniorum.
During this present event, the Colonia Aquincum local community of the Nova Roman Provincia Pannonia held its annual closing comitia session and elected the magistrates of Aquincum for the next year, but this will be another photo report, in the next post, which you can watch here:
