Description

"No static at all" was Steely Dan's chorus to their 1978 hit "FM" and man they were so right. The clarity of the FM music on stereo speakers was astonishing! Throughout the 60's AM radio was king up until about 1972, the sound was mono and really trebly. That was when we got our first FM multi-band radio that also had local police dispatch channels and we could access radio stations across the world. But it was the crystal clear sound of the music that allowed stereo recordings to be heard in their pristine condition in the comfort of your own home. I still remember the first time I heard Ramsey Lewis' "Sun Goddess" recorded with Maurice White who spoke some words and it felt just like he was standing there next to me. It was an incredible experience I have never forgotten.

While my ear was guided by Top40 music, the rest of my siblings were motorheads and they introduced me to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, Fleetwood Mac and Aerosmith. In 1973 they released "Dream On" but it did not catch on until after it was re-released in 1976 after the success of "Sweet Emotion". I very clearly remembered it from my last year of grade school

Formed in Boston, MA in 1970, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford were signed to Columbia Records and released their first LP "Aerosmith" in 1973. They had their first hit with "Dream On" that year when it peaked at #59. In 1975 "Sweet Emotion" peaked at #36 on the Hot100 and then "Dream On" was reissued and this time peaked at #6.

"Sweet Emotion" was from their third LP, "Toys In The Attic" and was inspired in part by the animosity of Joe Perry's wife towards the other band members and their wives.

Tom Hamilton wrote the music staring with that glimmering, shimmering funky as hell bass line. Joey Kramer played his guitar on the second and fourth beats as opposed to the first and third beats and the song was on its way. The next element was the opening guitar riff from a talk box and then again over the lyrics "Sweet Emotion" throughout the choruses. The stereo separation is incredible and the sound envelops you.

"Sweet Emotion" is one of Aerosmith's greatest contributions to rock and roll along side "Walk This Way" and "Dream On" all fighting to be their career defining song.

So there you have it, I'm a rock and roller too. I just love good music and while Aerosmith is light years away from the music I have on my channel here, they are a part of my musical education and I cherish it was much as I do every other song here.
