Air India 171, a Boeing 787-8, began its takeoff roll on Runway 23 following a normal taxi and backtrack procedure. After reaching the threshold and setting full thrust with flaps at position 5, a suspected failure of the right engine occurred at or just before V1—near the point of decision for continued takeoff.

Despite the apparent engine issue, rotation was initiated, and the aircraft lifted off. During the initial climb phase—lasting approximately 12 seconds—the aircraft gained about 625 feet of altitude over a distance of 1,200 meters, showing a high angle of attack. Then, according to preliminary data, the left engine may have also failed, triggering the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT). Cabin lights reportedly failed, with emergency lighting activating.

Shortly after, the aircraft began a slow descent, estimated at approximately 1,300 feet per minute. Around 18 seconds after liftoff, with a ground speed of roughly 162 knots, the aircraft impacted the Royal Mess building and the Atulyam 1, 2, 3 and 4 buildings, causing a fire on the Atulyam 4.

As of 6/17/2025, there have been 279 fatalities and 60 injuries with 1 survivor in the seat 11A.

This sequence remains speculative. Final findings will depend on thorough analysis by the relevant investigative authorities, including examination of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders.
