I went wild camping for 2 days over a two day metoffice amber storm warning for rain. Thinking that we be camping 300 meters up a chalk hill that flood water will not be a problem but little did i know i be hit by winds of 60mph even though was a warning for rain.
So we started of at Avebury stone circle after many stagecoach buses we arrived to lots of rain. Had a look around Avebury for the millionth time haha. Then headed on a 10km walk up to a chalk hill where we camped on a ancient dyke running coast to coast. Made good wind protection for the first night. First night was not to bad the Jack Wolfskin Gossamer Tents hold out super well in strong rain as always no problems. I even put my RAB Silwing Tarp up so i could get some shelter to cook my six Sausages. tarp worked a treat but ended up with a pool of water on in the morning. Next day still 300 meters up and still the Amber storm Warning we camped with very little wind protection in a open wooded area. Was windy and raining when we put the tents and tarp up but i felt i should take tarp down after i had cooked the burgers. Taking the tarp down was a good thing in the night we got hit with 60mph gusts. We only had a small amount of wind protection from the spaced out trees. My friend was scared from the storm as she also had her dog. There was a chance of the tents blowing down at one point it was very bad. I did some quick thinking and and photographic memory come into play. I remembered there was a spot with room for two small tents on a path way with good wind protection just 10 meters away. So my plan was what ever tent blown down first i would try move it to the sheltered spot and escort my friend and the dog to the tent. Then i move the next tent to the sheltered spot. In the end my doubling up the pegs kept the tents standing though out the night. In the morning on arriving near the West Kennet Long Barrow i noticed the old witch tree was destroyed my the wind in the night.
