Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras, Schubert created a vast legacy of songs, symphonies, chamber works, and sacred music. His Ave Maria, originally titled Ellens Gesang III (D. 839), was composed in 1825 as part of a song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. Though the original German text was not the Latin prayer, the melody soon became inseparably linked to the Catholic Ave Maria and is now beloved worldwide as one of the most iconic Marian hymns.
