I PUT IT ON ANYWAY, ON MY DRIVE HOME FROM WORK -- WHICH WAS A VERY LONG DRIVE. WHEN THE LAST TRACK STARTED, "BE STILL MY SOUL" CUED UP -- I WAS SMITTEN, OVERWHELMED, AND TRANSPORTED, TEARS WELLING UP AND RUNNING DOWN MY CHEEKS. THE WOMANS' VOICE AND THE SIMPLE PIANO WERE ANGELIC AND DEEPLY EMOTIVE.

Lisbeth's rendition of the hymn "Be Still My Soul," based on Sibelius' Finlandia, is performed with only simple piano accompaniment and is evocatively delivered, drenched with emotion, illustrating the depth and sincerity of her vocal range. It is a simply stunning track.

*The Story Behind Be Still, My Soul

After the success of the full-length symphonic poem (most of which consists of rousing and turbulent passages, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people), Sibelius published a stand-alone version of the "Be Still, My Soul" hymn as the last of twelve numbers in his Masonic Ritual Music, Op. 113, with a text by opera singer Wäinö Sola. The version usually heard today has lyrics written by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi and was first performed in 1941. Sibelius himself arranged the hymn for choral performances.

*The hymn most Americans know as ​​Be Still My Soul​ took multiple contributors and multiple centuries to become what we know today. Katharina​​​​​​ Von Schlegel wrote the text in 1752 in her native language of German. Just over 100 years later in 1855 Jane Borthwick translated the hymn into the English version so well known today. The tune most commonly used to sing this lyric is ​Finlandia​ written by Jean Sibelius between 1899-1900. Roughly 150 years, three authors from three different countries and ​three languages later, and we have one of the world's most beloved hymns. ​​​
