An extraordinary concert at a special location. At Germany’s biggest science center, the experimenta in Heilbronn, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn (Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, WKO) plays Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131, under the baton of head conductor Case Scaglione. The arrangement for chamber orchestra was made by Dimitri Mitropoulos. The concert was recorded in January 2021 as part of the project Science Meets Classic.

Beethoven (1770 – 1827) composed his String Quartet No. 14 between the end of 1825 and July 1826. It is the last of a trio of string quartets written in the order Op. 132, Op. 130 and Op. 131. Beethoven’s favorite of his later quartets was Op. 131. With String Quartet No. 14 he created a highly complex work that is considered one of the highlights in string-quartet literature. Far ahead of its time, the unusual length of seven movements alone indicates a new understanding of string quartets. Transparent structures and sophisticated movement characteristics pose a challenge that the orchestra accepts and masters with aplomb.

The experimenta is a science center in Heilbronn, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. This learning and experiential world is located in a former warehouse building and in a new building that was inaugurated in March 2019 on the Kraneninsel island. It exists to bring science and technology closer to people of all age groups.
