In the final movement of his Ninth Symphony, Ludwig van Beethoven gives musical expression to a vision of joyful brotherhood under God. Drawing on Friedrich Schiller’s Ode to Joy, Beethoven reimagines the poem as a transcendent hymn to the divine —"above the canopy of stars must dwell a loving Father."
With orchestra, chorus, and soloists united, this movement breaks new ground in symphonic form, celebrating the ideals of joy, peace, and unity not just among nations, but within the eternal order of creation. For Beethoven—who by this time was profoundly deaf—this work was both a personal and spiritual testament, expressing his belief in the possibility of harmony among all people, made in the image of God.
Conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, the National Symphony Orchestra brings to life the power and reverence of this monumental finale.
🎶 Filmed live in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on June 3, 2023.
