Capturing a moment from long ago, back when phones were just something attached to a curly wire, before we ourselves were so tethered to screens, when the complete horizon of possibility upon waking up in the morning was "what kind of adventure can we get into today..." The myriad baubles we chase in this life today –wealth, notoriety, respect, belonging- were all distilled into one raison d'etre, even if it was never thought about, only felt: the best friend.

This song aptly begins the album, Period Pieces & Farewell Songs, as homage to that unsung hero from those unsung times that –from crickets to creek beds to cloud parades- were so full of music.

God, it hadn’t felt this hot in ages,
But the creek is cool, "thank ya Jesus" -
Holy Spirit sendin’ breezes
Down the hobo-heaven culvert drains.

I snuck out early for no reason,
‘Cept to find you and get into some places
Of a’venture with my best of friends.

Laughed how there never were two like ours,
And toweled off with torn out Shakespeare plays.

And wake up still grounded with my best of friends.
