I have a good friend on YouTube, and beyond, who is a rabid Tull fan and also happens to play bass. A couple of years ago I told my friend, on a dare of sorts, that I would learn any Tull song of their choosing and that song wound up being "King Henry's Madrigal". I'd never heard it before and, though it was short, it was pretty complicated. It took me quite a few hours over a number of days to learn the three minute piece. Months later the same person introduced me to this song and, after listening to it, the first thing I thought was, "Thank god she didn't ask me to learn this song." It's a live version of "Bouree" off of the "A Little Light Music" album and I'm pretty sure that Dave Pegg was being paid by the note on this one.

I started messing around with it earlier this year, then put it away, never thinking I'd ever make it all the way through. I started learning it the way I learn every other song - one note at a time...one section at a time. After my Halloween hiatus I thought I'd punish myself and come back to Bouree. There's a little bit of low D stuff in the song and I hadn't played my MusicMan in, I don't know how long, but well over a year and a half, so I put some fresh strings on it and got to work. First I had to relearn the ground I'd already covered, which was up to the end of the bass solo, but the most difficult parts were yet to come.

I always, for lack of a better word, "enjoy" a good challenge, but figuring out a song like this out is, for me, pushing my limits. Of course learning a song of this nature is one thing - writing it, or something like it, another. I couldn't begin to imagine the musical vocabulary you'd need to possess in order to compose a bass line like this.

I just recorded this earlier today and figured I'd post it right away.

I'm not the type who dedicates songs and that sort of thing, but, that being said, this is for my buddy Helen.
