When I sat down to co-write with my friend, Chip Martin in the Spring of 2016, I suggested the title, "Broken Promise Land", which I initially imagined would be a country song about cheating in a relationship. Chip immediately recognized it as something bigger. The Presidential campaign was under way, and dissatisfaction with the political situation in America was fueling the campaigns of both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, both of whom were drawing huge crowds with their messages of fundamental change. With that realization, a song was born.

There was a lot to draw from in this song: unemployment resulting from offshoring of jobs, wealth inequality, Wall Street bailouts, poverty, wealth, and privilege, the criminal justice system, racial discrimination, violence,, and more. But there's also a hopeful message - in the USA, the power still rests with the people if we choose to unite, stand up, and take action. Vote! The American dream still lives.
