Description
"Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" was written by Jerome Kern, and Oscar Hammerstein II, for the 1927 musical “Showboat”. The song was strongly associated with 1920s torch singer Helen Morgan, who played Julie in the original 1927 stage production. Lena Horne sang the song in the “Showboat” segement in the 1946 MGM film “’Til The Clouds Roll By”. Horne auditioned for the part of Julie La Verne in the 1951 film version but lost to Ava Gardner. Horne stated that MGM executives required Gardner to practice her singing using Horne's recordings. It used to drive Gardner bonkers as she had recorded her own version of the song which was not bad at all. They finally chose to dub her vocal with another singer.
Lena Horne had a career which spanned over 70 years appearing in film, television and on Broadway. She is best known for her recording of the Arlen/Koehler standard "Stormy Weather". Despite her beauty, Horne found it difficult to get parts in Hollywood because of the color of her skin. As such, she received legendary status for an impressive career. While Lena Horne's voice was not with great range, it was extremely expressive and became more powerful as she aged. She was able to reach listeners emotionally by acting as well as singing the romantic standards in her repertory. She has been quoted as saying that “I learned how to sing from Mr. Harold Arlen.
