As described by Steve Perry - “Both of these were difficult to write about for me because they are about my childhood and more specifically my mom who died in 2007 whom I was very close to. My childhood was both beautiful and challenging. It was kind of a “What's Eating Gilbert Grape?” scenario. My mother struggled with her weight, with depression and with her role as a woman. She was also the smartest and kindest person I have ever known. It tore me apart to watch her hate herself, but it also largely formed my personality. My mom had a large circle of friends and loved to entertain and feel needed. She threw herself into her work as a social worker because she felt like a failure as a traditional mom. Therefore I was an anarchic, feral child with a deep need to somehow conjure the sunshine at every heartbreaking moment. It was exhausting for me, but I found a way to be. My wife had a similar unpleasant upbringing and “Up from the Downside” is additionally about our bonding and keeping each other aloft.”

Lyrics
Horrible days. We’ve come a long way
Basement room. Cold and dirty
Sneakin’ around. To go unnoticed
I see ‘em frown and look down their noses
I was the kid in town of the fat lady
They said you were too brown, stupid family
Never safe or sound, the house is a wreck
My little sisters I could not protect
You try to love but they don’t see
They wanted someone you’d never be
I’ve talked to thousands of souls just like you and me
We’re coming up
Up from the downside x 3
Sisters and brothers lift up each other
Up from the downside x 2
C’mon baby c’mon baby we’ve got to stay up x2
You were their mistake never forgiven
With feelings that don’t count you’re dispirited
Face full of doubts and vulnerable
Can’t wish away the family trouble
My mothers heart was blessed with depression
Struggled with her weight and aggression
All the playground chants that we faced
A holders house in constant rage
You try to love but they don’t see
They wanted someone you’d never be
I’ve talked to thousands of souls just like you and me
We’re coming up
Up from the downside x 3
Sisters and brothers lift up each other
Up from the downside x 2
C’mon baby c’mon baby we’ve got to stay
Sisters and brothers we’ve all paid such a heavy toll
But the fates that gave us hard times blessed us too with love and soul
We’re on this world so briefly and so I’m here to chiefly
Tell you its going to be cool so long as you pursue the golden rule
Get up get on up x 3
We’re up from the downside x 3
Sisters and brothers
We’re up from the downside x 3
C’mon baby c’mon baby
We’ve got to stay up x 4
We’re up from the downside x3
C’mon baby c’mon baby we’ve got to stay up
