Description
James Komack (Jackie Cooper's co-star in 'Hennesey') became a successful tv producer ('Eddie's Father', 'Kotter') and was interested in developing a Chicano-focused sitcom. After following Cheech & Chong's tour for several months he saw several skits he could work up into a sitcom, but getting the team to star didn't work out. Newcomer Freddie Prinze and Jack Albertson, as 'Chico and the Man' (1974), proved to have plenty of that tv intangible: chemistry. The show was a hit, but in its third season Prinze committed suicide, and the replacement character in season four apparently skipped chemistry class. Audiences drifted away from what would be the show's final season. José Feliciano wrote and performed the theme song.
