Cleo Laine, born Clementine Dinah Campbell on October 28, 1927, in Southall, Middlesex, England, is a renowned British jazz singer and actress. She is celebrated for her scat singing and her impressive vocal range, which spans from contralto to high C.
Laine's career took off when she successfully auditioned for John Dankworth's band, the Johnny Dankworth Seven, in 1951. She later married Dankworth in 1958, and they collaborated on numerous musical projects until his death in 2010. Laine has performed in various stage productions, including "Show Boat" and "Into the Woods," and has appeared in several films.
Throughout her career, Cleo Laine has received numerous accolades, including Grammy Award nominations in jazz, popular, and classical categories. She won a Grammy for Best Female Jazz Vocal Performance in 1986 for her album "Cleo at Carnegie: The 10th Anniversary Concert". Laine was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1977 and was elevated to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1997.
