Description
Well, exactly a week on from the US election and it’s a definitive result. America has spoken, and the world needs to buckle in for four more years of Trumpomania. History will now get to judge him, and the electoral decision, by his actions and achievements not words. We pulled this song together in an attempt to acknowledge lots of the things that people have told us they see in him. And in some ways, as a bookmark if our earlier songs were wrong. If ordinary people benefit and the rich don’t get richer, Ukraine doesn’t get abandoned, racist and divisive forces within the US don’t get empowered, women’s freedoms don’t get curtailed, justice and the constitution don’t get twisted. If we and millions others had ‘TDS’ (‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’) because we consume too much of a certain kind of news, then we should be big enough to admit it. And we do honestly hope we’re wrong, like we were wrong about hope. Time will tell.
“Come Together” was written by John Lennon, the catchphrase first inspired in 1969 in the wake of a national Democrat electoral collapse in 1968, and designed to help a failed bid to challenge Ronald Reagan for the governorship of California. It was the opening track on the Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road, and drew heavily on Chuck Berry’s blues vibe and lyrics in “You Can’t Catch Me” (1956). Coming together is likely an impossible (and even unwelcome) task for most of a divided USA – but here’s hoping that beyond the heat of the election cycle, there is a non-destructive path forward, and the kind of fears we expressed were overblown.
Lastly a quick word about comments. We read loads of them, and value them, even if we don’t have time or energy to respond to very many. We’ve tried hard to let in a mix of views, and for people to put the boot in, where they want to, and to dissent from ideas expressed in the songs. But don’t bother trying to embed links, start arguments, engage whataboutery, throw abuse etc. as there’s plenty of other places you can do that. And don’t bother telling us that we are brainwashing anyone or that young people shouldn’t be involved in politics or care about what happens in other countries or the world. We sing about what we want. They always get input and vetoes. Only two of them are now under sixteen. We will love them no matter what they do, believe, or become. We will make music together as long as we enjoy it and we can. Everything is political. Everything should be up for discussion.

LYRICS:
Here come old flat-top, he come groovin' up slowly
He got ju-ju eyeball, he one holy roller
He won hands down, comfortably
Got a lot of voters, he can do what he please
He may bring sunshine, he might slow the freefall
Make that petrol cheaper, reboot global order
He may rescue you, set you free
Make the country great again with efficiency
Come together, somehow
Carefully
He bagged election, without war or jackboots
He got Rogan onboard, he won Pennsylvania
In a ground down economy
Most viewed him as harmless or the change that they need
Come together, somehow
Carefully
On roller-coasters, you can’t stop the turning
There’s somebody laughing, and another squirming
You say, "TDS infected me"
Hope you’re right cos it feels more like PTSD
Come together, somehow
Watchfully
