Description
My Sacrifice is a song by the American rock band Creed, released in 2001 as the lead single from their third album, Weathered. The song was written by lead singer Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti, who also produced the track with John Kurzweg.
According to Stapp, the song was inspired by his personal struggles with substance abuse, depression, and alienation. He said that the song was about “coming out of the throes of a dark period in your life, whether that be a dark depression or a period of substance abuse or alcoholism, and then reconnecting with yourself”. He also said that the song was about “reconnecting with someone you love and your feelings when you’re with them”.
The song was a huge commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Mainstream Rock chart. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 2003. The song has been certified gold in Australia and has sold over 1.5 million copies in the US.
When Creed first came together as a performing unit in the mid-’90s, they initially went under the name Naked Toddler, as Tremonti had shown his bandmates a newspaper clipping that he kept in his wallet about an abducted “naked toddler”. Unsurprisingly, the name caused a negative reaction among the crowd, so the band decided to change it. Marshall suggested the name Mattox Creed, after a previous band he had been in. Stapp liked the Creed part, and the band agreed.
