Description: Pre-eminent jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut and his trio visited KUVO this past spring, and we recorded the session in the Bonfils–Stanton Performance Studio. They are playing music from his latest release, “Rhythm, Melody and Harmony,” and this intimate set will be shared on KUVO’s YouTube and Twitch channels on Thursday, July 24 at 11 a.m.
Born in 1963, Chestnut started his musical career at the age of three, playing piano at the Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church at the age of six in his hometown of Baltimore, MD. By age nine, he was studying classical music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute in Baltimore.
Chestnut was awarded the Eubie Blake Fellowship and other distinguished awards while earning his degree in jazz composition and arranging at the Berklee College of Music.
As a young sideman, his collaborations included the legends (Jon Hendricks, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Chick Corea, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Joe Williams, Isaac Hayes, Kathleen Battle, Betty Carter, Dizzy Gillespie and others), and his contemporaries, now considered today’s stars of jazz (Donald Harrison, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Gerald Albright, Regina Carter and others).
As a leader, his recording career began with There’s a Brighter Day Coming (self-released in the early 1990s). Now, more than thirty records later, Chestnut has gathered up awards from Japan’s Swing Journal, and numerous Top 10 efforts as reported by Jazz charts.
Chestnut was previously in Denver (February 2025) accompanying The Spirituals Project at DU Lamont School of Music. (The Morning Set interview interview can be heard at https://www.kuvo.org/news/live-and-local-cyrus-chestnut-joins-the-spirituals-project-on-stage-at-the-newman-center-thursday-night).
On this most recent tour, Mr. Chestnut performs with Kelton Norris (drums) and Herman Burney (bass), featuring original music from his latest release on High Note Records “Rhythm, Melody and Harmony.”
