Harpsichord by Keith Hill 1983, Organeum Weener.

"Lamentum Matris Euryalis" by Domenico Mazzocchi, or as Athanasius Kircher calls it in his "Musurgia universalis" 1650, the diatonic-chromatic-enharmonic lament of the Mother of Euryalus:

The text is derived from Virgil's Aeneid: Nisus and Euryalus are youths in the retinue of Aeneas during the Trojan War. One night, while on guard duty, the two friends decide to attack the enemy Rutulians' camp and commit a tremendous massacre—the most gruesome narrative in Virgil's work. In retaliation, the Rutulians impale Euryalus's head on a stake. Without regard for the ongoing war, Euryalus's mother rushes onto the battlefield to mourn her son's death. The personal tragedy now overshadows the euphoric carnage.

Virgil introduces the lament with the following verses, giving us a glimpse of the circumstances:

"Meanwhile, through the alarmed city with winged steps
the proclaiming cry rushes and soon reaches the ears of Euryalus's mother.
Suddenly warmth leaves her limbs; the web falls from her hands, and the spindles roll away.

Ah! How the wretched woman, with shrill cries, rushes out
and with disheveled hair, senseless, hurries to the walls and the forefront of the battle,
not thinking of the men or the dangers, not thinking of the missiles, and fills the air with her lamentations."

Athanasius Kircher also includes this work in his compendium and expresses his admiration with the following sentences:

"As the first among performing musicians, if I am not mistaken, the outstanding composer Domenico Mazzocchi, the famous author of a Madrigal work printed in Rome for a lament of the Mother of Euryalus, has conceived such a fitting fabric that one can consider him with admiration as the most worthy connoisseur, to be set as an example for all musicians to emulate."
