Fresh from his firing (or quitting, depending on what story you believe) from Van Halen, David Lee Roth embarked on a solo career beginning with a cover of the Beach Boys classic, "California Girls", which became a Top Five hit in 1985. That same year, Roth released another cover, a medley of two songs; "Just A Gigolo" and "I Ain't Got Nobody" (Louis Prima originally recorded this medley in 1958, and the Village People did their cover of Prima's version in 1978).
"Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" became the second Top 40 hit in the US for Roth, reaching #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, #25 on the Billboard Mainstrem Rock Tracks, and #20 on the Cash Box Top 100 charts. Roth's cover also reached #6 in New Zealand, #7 in Canada, and #13 in Australia.
