Description

George Harrison produced this song and played slide guitar on it! Pete Ham also played slide on his SG Standard (the same SG George used during the Beatles!), and George used Joey's 1963 Stratocaster (or possibly used his own Rocky Strat)

If you haven't heard of Badfinger, you have definitely heard their songs on the radio. No Matter What was their biggest hit, Come and Get It was a Paul McCartney original that he produced, and Baby Blue was featured in the final scene of Breaking Bad. They were a Welsh band, named after the original title of With A Little Help From My Friends- Badfinger Boogie

They were signed to Apple Records in 1968 under their original name The Iveys. Day After Day was from their 1971 album Straight Up, which Harrison produced. He had to leave the sessions early to host the Concert for Bangladesh, which Badfinger played acoustic guitars at. Todd Rundgren took over as producer of the album

Badfinger employed the wall of sound technique when it came to acoustic guitars. They had played on George's All Things Must Pass album in 1970, which Phil Spector had produced. The typical acoustic lineup as heard on My Sweet Lord was to have two 6 string acoustics and two 12 string acoustics, all playing the same chords

Day After Day most likely has four acoustic guitars on it, although it could have been two or three 12 string guitars. Leon Russell played the famous piano line, and Tom Evans played bass guitar. Then George and Pete Ham overdubbed their slide guitars

The song is in F major, but on the record it's slightly sharp of natural F. The acoustics all have a capo on the 1st fret, so you can play an E major open chord. The slides are both in standard tuning

I'm playing my 1969 Martin 00-18 and 1967 Gibson B-25-12 for the four acoustic guitars. I don't have an SG Standard like Pete Ham, so I'm using my 1970 Gibson SG Special. During the breakdown before the chorus, I'm playing my 1970's Fender Precision Bass to fill the empty space

For Harrison's slide part I'm using my 2022 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster on the bridge pickup. All the slide parts are run through my 1962 Fender Tweed Champ amp. George loved using small Fender champs in the studio, a setup he learned from Clapton's Layla era

I'm using a subtle tape flanging pedal on the slide guitars- the Strymon Deco. The reverb is from my Abbey Road Plates plug-in
