Forrest Richard Betts (born December 12, 1943), known as Dickey Betts, is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer best known as a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band.

Recognized as one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time, he had early on in his career one of rock's finest guitar partnerships with Duane Allman, introducing melodic twin guitar harmony and counterpoint which "rewrote the rules for how two rock guitarists can work together, completely scrapping the traditional rhythm/lead roles to stand toe to toe". Following Allman's death in 1971, Betts assumed sole lead guitar duties during the peak of the group's commercial success in the mid-1970s.

Betts was the writer and singer on the Allmans' only big hit single, "Ramblin' Man". He also gained renown for his ability to compose instrumentals, with one appearing on most Allman Brothers albums; the two most known being "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Jessica".

He was inducted with the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and also won a best rock performance Grammy Award with the band for "Jessica" in 1996. Betts was ranked No. 58 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list in 2003, and #61 on the list published in 2011. Betts departed the Allman Brothers Band in 2000 under acrimonious circumstances and performed and recorded on his own.

Der Gitarrist Richard "Dickey" Betts gehört zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der US-amerikanischen Allman Brothers Band, die sich Ende der 60er um die Brüder Duane & Gregg Allman formierte und deren Stil (Blues-Rock, Jazz, Country) als Southern Rock bezeichnet wird. Seine bekanntesten Kompositionen bei den Allman Brothers waren der Hit „Ramblin' Man“, der seiner Tochter gewidmete Instrumental-Song „Jessica“ sowie das in zahlreichen Improvisationen immer wieder veränderte, längere Instrumentalstück „In Memory of Elizabeth Reed“. 1995 wurde „Jessica“ mit einem Grammy als Best Rock Instrumental Performance ausgezeichnet.

Das Album Live at Fillmore East (1971) wird bis heute als ein Meilenstein aller Livealben der Rockmusik angesehen. Seit den späten 1990er-Jahren ist Betts kein Mitglied der ABB mehr, dies war ihm per Fax mitgeteilt worden. Seither verfolgt er (wie auch schon in den 1970er Jahren) seine Soloprojekte (unter anderem mit seiner eigenen Band Great Southern).

Dickey Betts befindet sich auf der Liste der 100 besten Gitarristen aller Zeiten der amerikanischen Musikzeitschrift Rolling Stone Magazine an 61. Stelle. In einer Liste aus dem Jahr 2003 hatte er Rang 58 belegt.
In den frühen Jahren der Allman Brothers Band benutzte Betts oft eine Gibson SG. Vor allem ist Betts als Spieler einer Gibson Les Paul Goldtop in Erscheinung getreten. Später wechselte er zu PRS Guitars. Heute spielt Betts wieder Gibson Les Paul Gitarren; inzwischen gibt es zwei Dickey-Betts-Signature Gitarren.
