*** "Lazzarella" composed by Domenico Modugno and Riccardo Pazzaglia. The song, with a performance by Aurelio Fierro, ranked second at the fifth edition of the Festival di Napoli. It also got an immediate commercial success, peaking at second place on the Italian hit parade. ***

Domenico Modugno - 9 January 1928 – 6 August 1994, born at Polignano a Mare, in the province of Bari. At the age of 9, his family moved to San Pietro Vernotico, in the Province of Brindisi, Here Domenico attended primary school and learned San Pietro Vernotico's dialect, which belongs to the linguistic area of Lecce's language, similar to Sicilian. He is known for his 1958 international hit song "Nel blu dipinto di blu", for which he received Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. He is considered the first Italian cantautore. Domenico was Widely regarded as one of the fathers of the Italian song writing, Domenico Modugno is one of two Italian artists, along with Renato Carosone, who had the ability to sell records in the United States with songs in the original Italian language.
In May 1953 Frank Sinatra is the guest of an Italian radio program, during which Modugno performs "Ninna nanna": Sinatra appreciates very much the song and asks Modugno a recording of the song. Sinatra will never record that song, but this will serve to raise the interest of the Italian radio and television executives.
