LYRICS:
Down by the sally gardens my love and I did meet.
She passed the sally gardens with little snow-white feet. She bid me take love easy,
As the leaves grow on the tree.
But I being young and foolish,
With her did not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I did stand.
And on my leaning shoulder she placed her snow-white hand. She bid me take life easy,
As the grass grows on the weirs.
But I was young and foolish,
And now am full of tears.
(W.B. Yeats, 1865–1939)
Down by the sally gardens
An arrangement of the traditional Irish folk tune, for men's voices, by John Rutter.
It forms part of his suite of folk-songs: The Sprig of Thyme, published by Oxford University Press.
Stillness and Sweet Harmony
From the wealth of music spanning over ten centuries recorded by the Cambridge Singers, John Rutter has selected fifteen serene and tranquil tracks from Collegium albums: the Gregorian chant 'Alma Redemptoris Mater', John Wilbye’s madrigal 'Draw on, sweet night', the 'Pie Jesu', from Fauré's Requiem, Allegri's soaring 'Miserere', and many more. This is music to bring peace.
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.
