Description

"The Downfall of Paris" is a traditional British military tune which dates back to the end of the 18th century, which became very popular with British troops throughout the constant wars with the French Republic and later Napoleon. It was played by British troops after the fall of then French-held Alexandria in 1801, which concluded the war against the French in Egypt. It was also played when British troops occupied Paris near the end of the Hundred Days in 1815, although this was quickly stopped by Wellington to prevent insulting the local populace (although that didn't stop other Coalition armies from playing the tune). The tune also became popular in both Ireland and the United States.

The famous drum beating associated with "The Downfall of Paris" originates from Bruce & Emmett's "The Drummer's and Fifer's Guide” (https://imslp.org/wiki/The_Drummer's_%26_Fifer's_Guide_(Emmett%2C_Daniel_Decatur)), an American manual written in 1862 and published in 1865.
