Description

Track 2 from the album “Duane & Greg Allman” released in 1972 copyright Bold Records. The album was released six months after Duane’s death in October, 1971. He died four days after their breakthrough live album “At Fillmore East” had achieved Gold status. This is a collection of early demos from 1968 recorded in Miami with Butch Truck’s folk-rock band “The 31st of February.” Duane and Gregg had their own band “Hourglass” at the time but were considering joining forces with Trucks’ band. The album features impressive covers, as well as the earliest recording of “Melissa” and Gregg’s tribute to Martin Luther King, “God Rest His Soul.” Gregg was destitute at the time and sold the rights to both those songs to producer Steve Alaimo for six hundred dollars. Recorded from the original vinyl. Written by Gregg Allman and produced by Steve Alaimo. RIP Duane Allman, Butch Trucks & Gregory Lenoir Allman. Featuring:

Duane Allman – Lead & rhythm guitars
Gregg Allman – Lead vocals & Hammond B-3 organ
Scott Boyer – Acoustic guitar & background vocals
David Brown – Bass
Butch Trucks – Drums & percussion

A man lay dyin' in the street
A thousand people fell down on their knees
Any other day he would have been preachin'
Reachin' all the people there, oh, Lord, Lord

But Lord knows I can't change what I saw
I say God rest his soul

The Memphis battleground was red
As blood came pouring from his head
With the women and children fallin' down cryin'
For the man they loved so well, Lord, Lord, Lord

But Lord knows I can't change what I saw
I say God rest his soul

Alright, break here

Lord knows I can't change what I saw
I say God rest his soul

The mornin' sun will rise again
With all their patience growin' thin
What are we gonna do when war has come and we're dyin'?
Dyin' for the cause I know, oh-oh-oh

Yeah, but Lord knows I can't change what I saw
I say God rest his soul
