Encanto is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 60th film produced by the studio, it was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, co-directed by writer Charise Castro Smith who co-wrote the screenplay with Bush, and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer, with original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The film features the voices of Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Mauro Castillo, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, Carolina Gaitán, Diane Guerrero, and Wilmer Valderrama. In the film, Mirabel Madrigal (Beatriz) is the only member of her family without a magical gift. When she learns the magic is in danger of disappearing, she sets out to find out what is happening to save both her family and her home.
The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021, and was theatrically released in the United States and Canada on November 24 over a 30-day theatrical run in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics reviewed the film positively, praising its emotion, animation and music. Commercially, the film underperformed due to its shortened theatrical run before becoming available on Disney+, but nevertheless grossed over $216 million worldwide as the highest-grossing animated film of 2021.[5] Its soundtrack was a commercial success, topping the US Billboard 200 chart and six of its tracks entering the Billboard Hot 100. Encanto received three Golden Globe nominations, winning for the Best Animated Feature Film.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.
The all-new original film features the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” says Beatriz. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right—something I love and relate to very much.”
