Description
"Cars" was Gary Numan's first single after he dropped the band name Tubeway Army. It was the lead single from his debut studio album The Pleasure Principle and was released on 21st August 1979. The bass guitar part was played by Paul Gardiner (1958-84).
The bass duplicates the monosynth lines in the song. I played my version using a Dean Edge bass fitted with Fender Chrome flatwound strings. This gives a more solid tone when using a pick compared to roundwound strings.
The bass went into an ART DI box, then into a Steinberg UR44. The audio was processed with the SSL Master Compressor Rack Extension to even out the sound, before some EQ to emphasise the low frequency elements before adding some chorus to thicken the sound using the Quartet rack extension.
