"Fürwahr, et trug unsere Krankheit" was Hugo Distler's last work before his death in 1942.

Here it is performed on February 24, 2013 by the West Village Chorale under the direction of Michael Conley.

From the program notes: "Hugo Distler's entire life is a somewhat existential embodiment of the search for spiritual peace that we are exploring in this program. He struggled with issues of depression and had the grove misfortune of living in Germany at a time in history when such issues were both frowned upon and acerbated by current events." ...

"If Distler's music is particular imploring, moving, startling, even tortured, it is not just some abstract expression, but the manifestation of a very real fear, and an ever-present suffering."
