Description
US singer/songwriter Fats Domino performs his hits Kansas City, I'm in Love Again, Honey Chile and Shake Rattle and Roll. He had 35 records in the U.S. Billboard Top 40, and 5 of his pre-1955 records sold more than a million copies. From 1955-60, he had eleven top 10 hits and his record sales were reportedly surpassed only by Elvis Presley. In 1986 he was one of the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In his concert at Expo ’86 in Vancouver, B.C, pianist, singer songwriter Antoine “Fats” Domino jr, with a French Creole background, performed his hits: I’m Walking, Valley of Tears, Blueberry Hill (his biggest hit) and Bo Weevil. Introducing Fats at one of his ’57 concerts, Elvis Presley said “ Rock ‘n’ Roll was here a long time before I came along. Let’s face it. I can’t sing it like Fats Domino can. I know that.” When a journalist referred to Presley as The King, “No” Presley said “ that’s the real king of rock ‘n’roll.” Both Lennon and McCartney recorded Domino songs. Paul McCartney wrote the Beatles’ “Lady Madonna” reproducing Domino’s style, and Fats recorded it in 1968, his last appearance on the Top 100. In 2008, a concert record “Going Home: a Tribute to Fats Domino” was released featuring his compositions sung by Elton John, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones and Lenny Kravitz.” Domino was one of the biggest rock ‘n’ roll stars in the 1950s and one of the first rhythm ‘n’ blues artists to gain popularity with white audiences in shared appreciation of his music. This shy, deferential, uncharismatic man invented New Orleans rock and roll.
