"Goodnight, Irene" or "Irene, Goodnight," is a 20th-century American folk standard, written in 3
4 time, first recorded by American blues musician Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter in 1933.
The lyrics tell of the singer's troubled past with his love, Irene, and express his sadness and frustration. Several verses refer explicitly to suicidal fantasies, most famously in the line "sometimes I take a great notion to jump in the river and drown," which was the inspiration for the 1964 Ken Kesey novel Sometimes a Great Notion and a song of the same name from John Mellencamp's 1989 album, Big Daddy, itself strongly informed by traditional American folk music.
George Baker (real name: Hans Bouwens) one of the most striking frontmen of Dutch pop music. With his group George Baker Selection, founded in Zaandam in 1967, he already won the Zilveren Harp in 1970, an incentive prize for talented musicians. In the 1970s, the group scored a series of hits, two of which were also successful abroad: "Little Green Bag" made it to the American charts, while "Paloma Blanca" was a number 1 hit in Germany, Australia and Sweden. From 1977 The George Baker Selection continues solo and he also focuses on writing songs for others (including BZN and Corry Konings). George Baker is still a welcome guest on the live circuit, especially in Germany. In 2011 Baker received the TROS Kompas Oeuvre Prize for his work.
