Description
My very first Grateful Dead concert was on August 4, 1976, at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ. This was a show which originally had been scheduled for July 2nd, but got r̶a̶i̶n̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶,̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶d̶i̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶o̶r̶i̶g̶i̶n̶a̶l̶ ̶r̶a̶i̶n̶ ̶d̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶J̶u̶l̶y̶ ̶3̶r̶d̶ rescheduled. Remarkably, somehow this is one of their only concerts from before the digital era for which there's complete (well, nearly complete) footage. That footage includes a pretty poor mono audio soundtrack. But a soundboard recording of the show's songs also exists. So I decided to give myself the project of marrying up the two. Took a couple of days, but it was worth it.
The show was a marathon one, about 4½ hours, and included a juggler and a monkey act during intermission--included here--along with fireworks (since it was supposed to have been a Bicentennial Weekend concert). I remember standing for just about the whole time, and not being happy about that. But I also remember thinking the concert was terrific, and in listening back to it all these years later, it still stands up, with some really fascinating moments. I can't remember who I went with--I was working at a summer camp in Annapolis, MD, so I must have taken a day off and gone with some of my cohorts there, or perhaps I met up with some other friends. I was 19 years old.
I reversed the channels on the soundboard recording, to match the visual. It also wasn't just finding the beginning of a song and dropping the audio in, I had to do a bunch of time stretching and condensing within each song, to account for variations in either the soundboard audio or the video, in order to sync things up. Think I got it all. I also added back in the one full song and the parts of a couple of other songs which were missing from the original video altogether (I just put a still shot in there during those periods). Did a bit of crossfading between the audio sources where it was required, too. And some of the soundboard audio files themselves had some audience tapes mixed in here and there, so that, of course, remains.
Figured I shouldn't be the only person to have this, so, enjoy...
