Description
Bass cover of Groove Me, by King Floyd. Includes tabs and some history on the recording.
King Floyd was born in 1945 in New Orleans, and got his start in music as a singer at the Sho-Bar on Bourbon Street.
His debut album was recorded in California with songs co-written with Dr. John. It failed to break the charts, and Floyd went back to New Orleans and worked for the post office.
In 1970, R&B arranger Wardell Quezergue persuaded Floyd to record “Groove Me” for Malaco Records in Jackson Mississippi.
Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff” was recorded in the same recording session.
The bass player for both songs was Vernie Robbins, who later went on to record for artists such as Dorothy Moore and Paul Simon.
“Groove Me” was a B-side to another Floyd song, “What Our Love Needs”. New Orleans radio DJ’s started playing it and it became a local hit.
Atlantic Records picked up national distribution, for “Groove Me” and the song reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over one million copies.
