Sung by Sandpipers
Released: 1966
The main idea of this song:
This is a familiar song to many because back in the 1960s, it was popularly sung in Chinese as "Guan Da La Mei La," and it was very popular in Taiwan at the time. Some people even sang it playfully as "一塊錢沒啦 / Yi kuai qian mei la" (meaning "I don't have a penny"). The original song is a folk song sung by Cuban farmers, similar to our tea-picking songs, with strong local flavors.

Lyrics [Spanish + Eng sub] :
Guantanamera,
Woman from Guantanamo
guajira Guantanamera
countrywoman from Guantanamo
Guantanamera,
Woman from Guantanamo
guajira Guantanamera
countrywoman from Guantanamo
Yo soy un hombre sincero
I am a truthful man
De donde crece la palma
From the land of the palm trees
Yo soy un hombre sincero
I am a truthful man
De donde crece la palma
From the land of the palm trees
Antes de morirme quiero
And before dying
Echar mis versos del alma
I want to share these poems of my soul

Guantanamera,
Woman from Guantanamo
guajira Guantanamera
countrywoman from Guantanamo
Guantanamera,
Woman from Guantanamo
guajira Guantanamera
countrywoman from Guantanamo

Mi verso es de un verde claro
My poems are soft green
Y de un carmín encendido
My poems are also flaming crimson
Mi verso es de un verde claro
My poems are soft green
Y de un carmín encendido
My poems are also flaming crimson
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
My poems are like a wounded fawn
Que busca en el monte amparo
Seeking refuge in the forest

The words mean I am a truthful man
From the land of the palm trees
And before dying
I want to share these poems of my soul
My poems are soft green
My poems are also flaming crimson
(Con los pobres de la tierra)
My poems are like a wounded fawn
(Quiero yo mi suerte echar)
Seeking refuge in the forest
(Quiero yo mi suerte echar)
The last verse says,
“Con los pobres de la tierra.”
With the poor people of this earth
I want to share my fate
(Quiero yo mi suerte echar)
The streams of the mountains
(El arroyo de la sierra)
Please me more than the sea
(Me complace más que el mar)
