I still remember the first time I saw Tango and how immediately I realized that I wanted to learn this dance. It was the very end of 2006, I was 17, and everything about it spoke to me: the flow, the shapes the bodies created, the music, and the vibe. Oh the vibe… There was something about it that resonated with a part of me that I didn’t know very much about. There was movement in silence, silence in movement, and walking never looked cooler.
Long story short, I started taking all the Tango classes I could, flying to Buenos Aires every year, social dancing as much as I could, watching all the videos, and even some movies and documentaries.
Although I was never able to do a Cabeceo - expect for one single time - the ritualistic of it made sense and brought comfort to me. The deep studies about embrace, breath, and weight transfers blew my mind every time and walking never felt cooler.
Then I finally realized that there was substance in nothing and complexity in simple. That nothing and simple was art, a craft to be mastered. The subtleties of silence and movement and the spaces between giving your weight from one leg to the other became apparent, and walking never felt so pleasurable.
The dancer I’m having the pleasure to share the dance of this video with is Masha Abapolnikova. Dancing with her for the first time brought me back into a state of mind and being I knew I was missing, but forgot about. She is just incredible and the DC tango scene is god damn lucky to have her! Her embrace is magic and the weight transfer are just…I don’t even know how to describe.
We decided then to do a couple of videos dancing Tango, show our love for it, and create future projects of collaboration to bring Brazilian Zouk and Tango together - somehow. Luckily for us, Kuna was available and excited to fim us. I got to wear a jacket after years and years and for the first time wear the magical tango pants - they legit dance in their own.
We selected one of the most beautiful and danced tango songs of all time for the first one. This smile tattooed to my face is 100% pure Tango bliss.
