Hillgrove Secondary School presents "United" Virtual Ensemble (in celebration of National Day 2020)

Hillgrove Secondary School is proud to present our very own Hillgrove Virtual Ensemble, with an original composition titled “United”, written by our student, Jerron Ng Joon Kee.

This video is a school-wide initiative to rally people of all ages and from all walks of life to stand together and unite as one. What is unique about this project is the integration of the seven Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) CCAs in Hillgrove Secondary School, together with our staff, students, parents, and alumni as one, in one virtual ensemble, to encourage our peers and fellow Singaporeans to stay strong and united despite the trying times of Covid-19.

During Phase 2 of the Circuit Breaker, even though schools reopened, CCAs still could not take place as usual due to Safe Management Measures, and had to be migrated to the virtual platform. Although this presented challenges for the VPA CCAs, our students, teachers, and instructors jointly embarked on e-CCAs and rose to the challenge of practising and rehearsing for the performances that you see in this video. The Art Club customised their own masks, the Choir and Concert Band sang and made music with one another online, the Malay Dance and Modern Dance danced with their peers via Google Meet sessions, the Drama Club explored monologues, while the Media Club got to refine their filming techniques in the process of collecting footages for this video. Therefore, this video also hopes to present the fruits of our students’ labour, resilience and fortitude, by showcasing what our students have managed to achieve despite the Circuit Breaker and Phase 2.

This project took place over a span of two months (June and July) - one month for the refining and production of the song, and another month for the submission and post-production of videos. An open call was held through our social media channels to gather more footages as well. The students worked through the school term and mid-term break under the guidance of their dedicated teachers and instructors to practise and complete their music, choreography, artwork, and recordings. It was a challenging timeline to meet, but they did it!
