The various members of The Byrds all brought something special to the table – McGuinn’s Rickenbacker sound, Crosby’s voice, Michael’s haircut – but it was Gene Clark who encapsulated the era’s cool swinging freedom and his songs for the Byrds (and after) have always been melodic and heartfelt.
