“I’m Alabama Bound” (Trad)
Bev Pegg and his Railroad Skiffle Group
At the Bromyard Festival of Jazz 2012
Line up: Bev - vocal / guitar, Paul Degville – guitar, Harry Rowlands – bass guitar, Ken Wright – drums.
Footnote from Bev: There is a tinge of sadness surrounding the various videos from this particular gig.
It was in fact the last gig performed by excellent guitarist Paul Degville. He was a fine guitarist playing alongside many top jazz stars during his career. However over recent years he had problems with stiffness of his fingers, consequently on this gig he was not able to solo at the high level that he used to, notwithstanding, he was still pretty useful.
Paul was very keen to do this gig when I booked him. We were both Django Reinhardt enthusiasts and had many laughs whenever we got together. Just before we went on stage, he mentioned casually that he’d just finished a course of chemotherapy, however he said that everything was fine now. Within five months, I was attending his funeral. Paul sadly died on 6th January 2013 at the age of sixty-five.
Adding to the sadness, Harry Rowlands on bass guitar, one of my very dearest friends, also passed away on 12th November 2013. Harry was a very successful businessman. He started a company in 1983 and by 1996 it had a turnover of £40 million. He retired at the age of 55, and as recognition of his contribution to the water industry, Harry became a Freeman of the City of London. However, he always did his utmost to ensure he didn’t miss a gig with the band.
