IMPROVISATION on 'M A L A G U E N A' - L E C U O N A
A story and memories related to Edda Filson, this music, and others.
In the early 90s, I had the opportunity to meet Edda Filson (R.I.P.), creator, programmer, host, and presenter of a radio program dedicated to the guitar. She invited me to perform a concert recorded in the studios of Radio 2MBS FM, which featured the country's most prominent classical guitarists.
Once the recording was finished, Edda suggested that I want to continue recording more music, that the studio was available and that new material would be available for future programs.
Since I had only prepared the programmed pieces, I also thought it would be a good opportunity to experimentally record something different, and I said to Edda... 'How about if I play only improvisations?' To which she very pleased replied, "Victor, you're free to play whatever you want; you have the studio to yourself."
And so, as a result, I recorded several improvisations while Edda took care of recording my guitar from the mixer. Also was in several times recording live performance and recorded my Quartet for guitar'Hermana Trinidad' and my Trio 'En el Desierto de Capricornio'and others. Edda was an elderly woman, extraordinarily open to all new music (which always surprised me). When she first encountered my music, she seemed deeply attracted to my style, and I believe I became one of her favorite musicians.
In 1995, thanks to Edda and the radio station's management, I had the idea of making my CD, "Si vas para Chile," which was published nationwide, along with advertisements in the magazine "2MBS Fine Music," which was featured in the 2MBS music catalog for a long time. Edda was one of the main people who made it possible for me to be recognized at the highest level of classical music in the country by frequently broadcasting my recordings. It was the first major door that opened (even ABC Radio played my CD sporadically, especially my "Fantay on the Condor Pasa").
Later in 1996, Edda invited me to make new recordings, which also included new improvisations.
As time went by, we shared pleasant moments, both at her home and at ours with my wife Gloria (R.I.P). Gloria shared and prepared delicious dishes with so much love and passion, while I took the opportunity to show them my work, the scores, and even Richard Austin composer.
But it would be very ungrateful not to mention that prior to all these achievements, the facilitator of these contacts and processes began with another important, magnificent woman,Cinzia Guaraldi (SBSTV Producer, among other positions), who was already familiar with my work.Cinzia arranged the first meeting with the 2MBS executives, which included Edda Filson and composer Richard Austin(R.I.P) to whom in life I dedicated my composition;”Introduccion al Tango”Homage to Astor Piazzolla for Guitar Quartet,Two Cellos, and Percussion (lasting approximately 30 minutes), who was infinitely grateful for this gesture.
Thanks to Cinzia, the future took shape in favor of my career.
Time passed, and one day Gloria and I decided to visit her home. She was no longer there. Then her daughter gave us the sad news of Edda's death.
I dedicated one of my improvisations to her memory.
