In Oxford town
the factories replace the rolling farms.
Now, factories are leaving
and dear Oxford clings tight to her charms.
The bookstores falling down;
the big box stores they get their way;
the record shops long gone from town
I miss those sweeter, cultured days.
The kids get standardized each day inside the public schools.
Affections digitized and medicated by the corporate fools.
The New Age comes to town dressed down with yoga and a gym,
and a wilting Southern debutante laments the sex she had with him.
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” she’s crying.
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” she’s crying,
“I wish I’d never seen his face!”
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” she’s crying.
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” she’s crying.
“I wish I’d made a better bargain…”
In every town you find the good
and then the bad find you.
You might the charlatans and crooks
and the handful who dare to be true.
I found facsimiles of someone else’s
cherished past,
and dreams of pride and property,
so coveted, but can they last?
And Oxford sighs its cautious way when told the future’s lent
to BioTech, the New World Bank, and the little men they have sent
to make us slaves to money, pills and New Prosperity.
That gospel’s all about the Benjamin's the blind will never see!
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” they’re crying.
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” we’re crying,
“We wish I’d never seen their faces!”
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” we’re crying.
“Oh, Oh, Oh,” we’re crying.
Somehow we’ll make a better bargain!”
