🌺 About the Song
Composed in 1891 by Queen Kapiʻolani as her ailing husband King David Kalākaua lay in San Francisco, “Ipo Lei Manu” paints the monarch as a crimson ʻiʻiwi bird crowned with a fragrant lei. Rain-soaked Hanalei, the scent of hala and roses, and the refrain Haʻina ka puana all echo her longing for a chief who would never return home. Over a century later, Rev. Dennis Kamakahi adopted the mele, adding his signature ʻAhe manu kuʻu hoa, eā flourish and gentle C-Mauna-Loa slack-key groove.
