Description
I hadn't yet done any songs with that classic Steve Harris gallop, so here you go. It's not the most interesting song choice, I'll admit. I just wanted to show that I can do it, and do it right. So one take with no tricks, with only two fingers and the I-M-I-I-M-I plucking pattern. Otherwise it doesn't sound quite right, to be honest. One thing that practically every other bass player seems to miss is the slight staccato feel of the gallop; you can see from my fretting hand that I lift and mute the last note of the gallop to make it sound right.
A song like this isn't actually an endurance test. It sure felt like one at first, but as soon as my technique got good enough to keep the right hand relaxed and still hit the tempo, it was a breeze.
Signal chain: Fender American Pro II Precision - Focusrite 2i2 - TSE BOD - some EQ and reverb in Reaper. I boosted the lower mids on the bass a bit to better match Steve's tone on the Piece of Mind album.
