It’s wise to dodge pigeonholes. Jade Bird, who impressed us all when she became a Vevo Dscvr artist back in 2019, has always cast a wide net when crafting her sound. Varied interests and steady growth have kept her music in an engaging state of flux for the last three years. These days the UK singer lives in Austin, and on the way to making her upcoming ‘Different Kinds of Light’ album, she travelled from Japan to Mexico to rural upstate New York before heading to Nashville to cut its tracks with revered producer Dave Cobb. Perspective is key. “I kept adding pieces of songs along the way until it became phases of who I am, what my relationship is and what my relationship to other people has become,” says the Son House fan who took a shot at Mazzy Star’s “Into Dust” when first learning how to play the guitar. “I’ve written about myself and people who don’t exist, or at least only exist in my mind, memory and imagination.” The pop smarts of “Now Is the Time” and "Candidate" have us amped for the August 13 release of the album.
