Description
Jazz (2025): Sound sculpture on wheels/Consumer electronics dissembled and connected into a new circuitry/Ultimate patching
Jazz is dealing with collaging small sections of musical material through diversified network of devices. These fragments of music technology create an ecosystem where musical relations between different segments of the piece form a counterpoint between functionality and musicality of objects.
Initial ideas come from questioning of materiality in sound art (or music in general), and fetishisation of music technology as promoted by the music industry and amplified by social networks. Such materiality manifests itself, among other ways, in consumer electronics—affordable gear for musicians designed for mass consumption—that commodifies creative decisions by default. By disrupting expected patterns of usage through small musical and technical interventions, we can liberate musical structure and critically engage with these “mainstream” means of production.
Commissioned by the International Music Institute Darmstadt and exhibited as part of the exhibition Situations at Kunsthalle Darmstadt, curated by Carsten Seiffarth and directed by Robert Lippok.
