FAQ
Q: Where can I get free sheet music for this piece?
A: Here:
http://www.musanim.com/pdf/HeliotropeBouquet.pdf
Q: Who is playing?
A: Me, Stephen Malinowski (smalin on YouTube).
Q: You sure make a lot of mistakes.
A: Yeah, well ... nobody's perfect ...
Q: How did Joplin and Chauvin collaborate?
A: Chauvin composed the first two sections of the piece, which Joplin first heard when he was visiting Chauvin in Chicago in 1906. Joplin improved the harmonies in the part Chauvin composed and added two sections of his own. Chauvin couldn't read music; Joplin wrote the music down and got it published.
Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean?
A: The colors indicate the "pitch class" of the notes; that is, every A is a certain color (blue), every B is a certain color (olive green), etc. The piece starts out in the key of G, so there's lots of blue at the beginning; in the third section it modulates to C, which move it toward green. The choice of colors is based on the "circle of fifths," which you can read about here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_fifths
This method of coloring notes is described more here:

Q: Is there a way I can make bar-graph scores myself?
A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate this display; you can get the (Windows) software here:
http://www.musanim.com/player/
There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; I usually go to the Classical Archives site first:
